Acupressure Works!

By Guangzhi Xing

Using the fingers to press specific points on the skin surface to cure sickness is called acupressure.

The technique was developed thousands of years ago by the Chinese, who discovered that when certain parts of the body are pressed, some certain ailments could be relieved.

You may be familiar with acupuncture, which uses needles to penetrate these points on the body. Acupressure uses those same points, but stimulates them only with the the power and sensitivity of the human hand.

In Acupressure: The Timeless Art of Self Healing, instructor Teresa Girolami teaches the 14 distinct chi (energy), which carry pathways, that lead to specific points with in the body and govern vital organ and tissue health. this video has the potential to create increased body awareness for anyone willing to try a non-invasive approach to healing.

Acupressure is practiced in a holistic manner, meaning the pain or symptoms a patient feels are considered an expression of the condition of the body as a whole. For instance, relieving a headache may be a matter of targeting the neck and shoulders, or some other part of the body which may be causing the headache, rather than treating the head itself. Then, relieving the headache contributes to a general sense of well-being throughout the body, mind and spirit.

The nice thing about acupressure is anyone can do it with very little risk involved. As long as you follow procedure and use caution, anyone can practice it on themselves or others, anywhere, with the two hands the only equipment needed.

Even if you don't feel sick, acupressure is beneficial. It can relieving stress, strengthen immunity and even help you get a good night's sleep.

Acupressure Step by Step: The Oriental Way to Health should be in the library of every person who takes responsibility for their health. This fully illustrated guide describes the acupressure technique, how it works and how it can be used to prevent or relieve a wide range of common complaints such as colds, backaches, headaches, insomnia and menstrual problems.

Scientists say acupressure works because when pressure points on the body are stimulated, pain-relieving endorphins are released, helping oxygen and blood flow to the affected area, and helping the muscles to relax.

Of course, the ancient Chinese didn't refer to it in quite so scientific a manner. They called it "Chi," the human energy carried by "pathways" between these pressure points.

Acupressure has been in practice in China since the days of antiquity, but has only since the 1970s has the U.S. come to realize the benefits of this enchanting healing art.
