Gourmet Tour of China

Explore the best of Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Shaoxing and Shanghai

October 9 to 21, 2004

The Chinese have spent thousands of years refining the art of cooking to create one of the most balanced, healthy diets in the world, as well as some of the most delicious dishes. Now you can join the Chinese Cultural Exchange on its newest and tastiest China trip ever – a Gourmet Tour of China!

On our tours of Beijing, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Shaoxing and Shanghai, we’ll not only see the sights, we’ll dine on regional specialties and learn how to cook some of them, too!  We’ll dine in places like the exclusive China Club, set in a 16th Century Qing dynasty palace, the 160 year old Quan Ju De Peking Duck Restaurant, the De Fa Chang Dumpling Restaurant.  Our meals may include local delicacies like smoked duck with camphor wood and tea leaves, fragrant lamb kebabs with cumin and paprika, delectable prawns with tea leaves, seared Mandarin fish with Sichuan pickled vegetables, and the Madeira-like amber rice wine “Shaoxing Huadiao Jiu.” And don’t forget the dumplings! Steamed or boiled, with a variety of fillings, these “jiazi” are a lunchtime favorite.

We’ll attend cooking classes with master chefs like Tian Rufu of the luxurious Grand Hotel Beijing Summer Pavilion executive chef Ho Wing, and with the chef of the famous Shangri-la Hotel.

We’ll get a local perspective at regional markets and produce stands and sample the delicious goods of street vendors, attend a session on tea appreciation with tea masters and enjoy an elegant Tang Dynasty Theater performance.

Among the sites we’ll visit are the vast and ancient Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Silk Market, the 2,300 year-old terra cotta warriors, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Shaanxi History Museum, and the Forest of Stone Tablets (the oldest library in the world).

We hope to see you on this trip of a lifetime!
